Agentic commerce

Agentic commerce — shopping in which an AI agent does part of the work on the shopper’s behalf: finding products, comparing them, and in some cases completing the purchase.

What changes for a merchant

The first reader of your store is increasingly not a person. An assistant asked for “a waterproof trail shoe under $150 that ships by Friday” is reading product data — titles, attributes, price, availability, shipping and returns — and assembling a shortlist before a human sees a single page. What it cannot parse, it cannot recommend.

Where it stands in 2026

The infrastructure arrived quickly and then sorted itself out. OpenAI and Stripe launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol with in-chat checkout in September 2025; in March 2026 OpenAI stepped back from native checkout in favor of sending buyers to merchants’ own sites and apps. Google and Shopify introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026, which powers checkout in AI Mode and Gemini for eligible merchants, and Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout the same week. Shopify now syndicates eligible merchants’ catalogs to ChatGPT, Copilot and Google’s AI surfaces through Agentic Storefronts.

The pattern that has held: discovery is moving into the assistant, checkout is still contested, and both depend on the product data.
