A year ago the question was whether shoppers would buy inside a chatbot. The answer turned out to be: sometimes, depending on which chatbot, and the rules changed twice in the meantime. What did not change is the part that matters most to a store — an AI assistant is now doing the first round of shopping, and it does it by reading your product data.
This is a plain account of what happened, what is live today, and the short list of things a Shopify merchant should do about it. Every date is sourced at the bottom, and all of it was checked on 25 September 2026. It will move again.
Twelve months, three protocols, one retreat
- 29 September 2025. OpenAI and Stripe launch Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and publish the Agentic Commerce Protocol. US users can buy from Etsy sellers inside the chat; over a million Shopify merchants are announced as “coming soon.”
- 8 January 2026. Microsoft launches Copilot Checkout with PayPal, Stripe and Shopify.
- 11 January 2026. Google announces the Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, to power checkout in AI Mode and Gemini.
- March 2026. OpenAI scales back native checkout in ChatGPT. Discovery stays in the chat; buyers are sent to the merchant’s own site, or into a merchant’s app inside ChatGPT, to pay.
- 24 March 2026. Shopify says its Agentic Storefronts are live in ChatGPT, with Copilot already selling and select brands live in AI Mode and Gemini.
Read the list as a market finding its shape, not as a failure. The piece that proved hard was the checkout — tax, multi-item carts, returns, fraud, all the things a store’s own checkout has spent a decade getting right. The piece that proved durable was discovery: the assistant researching, comparing and shortlisting.
The number
~13×growth in orders from AI-powered searches to Shopify stores, year over year, in Q1 2026 — with AI-driven traffic up roughly eight times. That is Shopify’s own figure about its own platform.
Treat it as direction, not size. Shopify did not publish the base, and growth multiples from a small starting point always look dramatic. The honest reading is that the channel is real, growing quickly, and still small next to search and social for most stores.
What an assistant actually reads
When someone asks for “a linen duvet cover in king, under $200, that ships before the weekend,” the assistant is not browsing your homepage. It is reading structured product information — title, attributes, variants, price, availability, shipping and returns — from a product feed or a catalog service, checking it against the question, and assembling a shortlist.
On Shopify, that catalog service is Shopify Catalog. According to Shopify it structures and syndicates eligible merchants’ product data to AI channels automatically, with no app to install. OpenAI, for its part, says the products ChatGPT shows are chosen independently and are not ads.
So the leverage has moved. For this channel, your storefront is your product data.
Being syndicated is not the same as being chosen. Every eligible Shopify store is now in the same catalog. What separates the shortlisted ones is whether the data answers the question the shopper actually asked.
What to do this quarter
None of this requires a new platform. Most of it is a merchandising sprint.
- Open the agentic section in Shopify admin. Confirm which AI channels receive your catalog, and whether direct checkout is on for the channels that offer it. Decide deliberately; don’t inherit a default.
- Audit twenty product records, not your homepage. Titles that say what the thing is. Variants that are real variants. Attributes a buyer filters on — size, material, fit, compatibility, dimensions — stored as data, not buried in a description.
- Answer the questions shoppers ask, on the page. Care instructions, sizing, what’s in the box, what it works with. Google added Merchant Center attributes for exactly this in January.
- Write your policies like you expect them to be quoted. Shipping times, return windows, exchange rules, in plain sentences. Agents compare these, and vague policy reads as risk.
- Check that the page and the feed agree. Price, availability and structured data should match everywhere. Run three product URLs through Google’s Rich Results Test; if price and reviews don’t parse, that’s the first fix.
- Measure it separately. Segment referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics so the channel has its own line in the report, instead of hiding inside “referral.”
What it doesn’t mean
- It doesn’t mean you need a ChatGPT app. Large retailers built them; a typical Shopify store is already in the catalog.
- It doesn’t mean native checkout is dead. It is live in Copilot and rolling out in Google’s AI surfaces for eligible merchants in the US, Canada and Australia.
- It doesn’t mean anyone can guarantee you a placement. Nobody controls how these assistants choose, and anyone who says otherwise is describing something they don’t own.
If you’re not on Shopify
The same principles apply with more assembly. Shopify offers an Agentic plan that lets non-Shopify merchants list products in AI channels without replatforming. OpenAI accepts direct product feeds. Google’s path runs through Merchant Center. In every case, the first deliverable is the same: a clean, complete, current product feed.
