Zero-click search — A search that ends without the person clicking through to any website.
The number
SparkToro, using Similarweb desktop and mobile panel data for US Google searches from January through April 2026, found that 68.01% of searches ended without a click — against 60.45% in 2024.
SparkToro is explicit that long-run comparisons are not directly equivalent, because historical studies used different data providers and methods. The trend is solid; the precise gap between years is not.

Why it reframes the job
If most searches end in an answer rather than a visit, then traffic is a shrinking measure of whether search is working for you. Being in the answer becomes the objective, and the metric shifts from sessions to whether you were named.
It does not mean traffic stops mattering. It means a strategy measured only in sessions will report a decline while the business is doing fine, or report stability while the business quietly disappears from the answers.
