Google Business Profile — the free listing that controls how a business appears in Google Search and Maps. Formerly Google My Business.
The most load-bearing asset in local search
It is the one place where a business states its own facts directly to Google rather than hoping they are inferred from a website. Category, service area, hours, attributes, photos, products, reviews, and the questions customers ask in public. It also feeds well beyond Maps — the facts on the profile propagate into other systems that describe your business, including the ones writing AI answers.
It is free, it takes an afternoon to complete properly, and most businesses in most categories have not finished it. That combination is rare enough to be worth acting on.
What Google says drives local ranking
“Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” Relevance is how well you match the search, distance is geography, and prominence is how well known the business is — which Google says draws on information from across the web, including links, articles, and directories.
Note what is absent from that sentence: any promise that a complete profile outranks a nearer competitor. Distance is doing more work than most vendors admit.
